Dangerous Hours of Service Truck Provision not included in final Highway Bill H.R.3. The truck safety community is pleased with the bipartisan rejection of a provision that would have negatively impacted Hours of Service. If accepted, this amendment would have increased the hours that a trucker can drive in a week by 20 percent, thereby increasing the likelihood of fatigued drivers. This provision was already overruled by a unanimous three judge panel of the U.S Court of Appeals last year and harshly criticized for further endangering the lives of truckers and motorists alike. The rejection of this provision is a victory for those working hard to promote truck safety and for each individual that travels our nation’s roads every day. In addition, this legislation addressed several important motor vehicle highway safety issues. These include new safety standards that will positively impact the two most lethal types of crashes- rollover and side impact. The combination of these safety provisions in the new legislation will save thousands of lives. |
