VICTORY IN DEFEATING ANTI-TRUCK SAFETY AMENDMENTS!

Thank you for your response to our legislative alert that we sent to you. Last Wednesday, the House of Representatives rejected several anti-truck safety amendments. Expressing your strong opposition to these legislative proposals to roll back truck safety contributed to our successes. U.S. Congressman John Boozman (R-AR) withdrew his amendment, the so-called “Wal-Mart” amendment, to the surface transportation bill (H.R. 3) in the face of strong public opposition and negative publicity about the dangers of truck driver fatigue. This amendment would have extended the workday of truck drivers to a staggering 16 hours, instead of the 14 hours c! urrently allowed that is already too long.

We also defeated, on a close vote, an amendment offered by Rep. Michael Conaway (R-TX) that would have allowed hours of service exemptions for truck drivers in the oil and gas industries.

These amendments, if passed, would have deadly and dangerous consequences for truck drivers and millions of Americans who travel our nation’s highways daily.

Thank you for your telephone calls, letters and emails. Your help in opposing special interest provisions that undercut truck safety helped to defeat these irresponsible measures.

We expect that many of these same special interest truck provisions will be offered again, this time in the U.S. Senate. In the next few weeks we will keep you informed about any new legislative developments. Thank you for your help at a critical time when special trucking interests are trying to roll back safety even as truck crash deaths are on the rise.
